Commercial Trailers
 Our commercial grade trailers are designed and built with usability and durability the primary considerations. We use only 1/8" or 3/16" welded steel tubing and channel. The only thing we bolt on are the lights. We offer canoe trailers in capacities from 4 to 30. Our most popular size is the 8 place. For the sake of clarity, by "place" we mean the capacity to place one average sized canoe (16') per "place". Our trailers are often used to transport kayaks but it is not possible to rate the capacity in terms of kayaks because of the variety of sizes. The user can make a determination once we have given them the dimensions of the trailer which they have in mind. A pretty good rule of thumb is that you can substitute two kayaks for one canoe.
All of our commercial grade trailers have the following basic specs:
- 15' long: 7' between trees and an 8' tongue
- 3/16" channel frame with a 3" x 2" x 1/8" tube draw beam
- 2" coupler
- safety chains
- handle on tongue for ease of movement
- standard four prong connector DOT lighting and reflective markings
- 2000# Dexter torsion suspension with EZLube hubs (largest spindles available)
- 13" bias tires
- rack system is 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1/8" tubing: 36" horizontal and 18" vertical spacing
 Upgrades available:
- 13" radial tires
- electric brakes
- LED lights
- horizontal surface padding
- fold-away jack ( wheel or pad)
- open top box
- tree dimension changes
We also offer a unit which is designed to haul kayaks only. The trailer is built using the same materials and fabrication techniques as the units above. The design of the tree system is such that the load bars are on a 10% incline toward the center to facilitate one person loading and unloading. The unit is typically used in a rental operation where a quick turnaround time for up to 12 kayaks can be accomplished with a minimum of personnel.
Maine Portage is willing to talk about any needs which you may have, we are not locked into any preconceived ideas about your operational requirements. We may have some spec trailers on hand but we usually build to order. This arrangement allows the customer to get what they want and need within 3 weeks (typically). We do not use any galvanized steel or aluminum. If you want to know why, just ask, we will be happy to explain.
We also have the ability to deliver. However, with the cost of transportation these days it is sometimes a pricey option. Many of our customers coordinate purchases from Old Town Canoe (Johnson Outdoors) with the purchase of the trailer. It is a simple matter for Maine Portage to deliver the trailer to Old Town's distribution center in Bangor, ME. The customer can pickup both and save on transportation costs. Maine Portage will also pickup your boats at Old Town and deliver them with the trailer. We realize that you are making a sizable financial commitment and we will do what we can to help control your costs associated with obtaining our trailers.
We require a 30% deposit on most orders and a 50% deposit on some custom orders. Checks are preferred but credit cards are accepted with a 2% handling fee.
